Our eyes are yet to open.

I’m Laura Uronen, a final-year PhD student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. My research focuses on leveraging multi-messenger lensing to understand binary black holes, their history, and their relationship to their environments and the Universe. By combining lensed gravitational waves with electromagnetic pictures of gravitational lenses, we can localise binary black holes to regions smaller than their host galaxies, which lets us study where the black holes are in relation to the host. Typical LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA sky localisations are too large to even find the host galaxy, so multi-messenger lensing lets us do what no other method can and find where the black holes are coming from. My research wants to answer the question, once we find the black holes, what can they tell us?
